This ruffled scarf is so cute and easy to make!
I came up with this ruffled scarf pattern because I wanted something feminine and soft. I’ve made two lace scarves – so this time I decided to try a knit fabric.
I love how it turned out! I’ve already worn it a bunch of times and it’s cute with t-shirts and jeans and works with my dressier cardigans and skirts too. At about $5.00 I think I will make a bunch for friends and family this Christmas (sorry to spoil the surprise) .
I just cut out a black one and I have some rhinestones that I am going to use in the middle of the flowers ~ I will post a picture when I am done.
This scarf “how to” is perfect for beginners, because if you can zigzag, you can make this ruffled scarf.
Materials and Supplies for the ruffled scarf:
- 1/2 yard Knit fabric 60″ wide for each scarf
- Thread to match
- 1/4″ wide package of elastic (optional)
- Pearls, Rhinestones or beads for the center of the flowers
Cut fabric as follows :
- 1 strip 6″ wide X 60″ (width of the fabric)
- 1 strip 4″ x 60″
- 18 * circles 3″ in diameter
- 18 * circles 2″ in diameter
I like my corners slightly rounded so if you want yours rounded use a kitchen plate, picture frame or create your own paper template and trace onto each corner of both strips of the fabric and cut out.
Set your machine to the widest zigzag stitch and stitch length to between 0 and one. We are going to stretch the fabric as we sew. Holding the fabric taught both in front and in back of the presser foot as you zigzag over the edge – this creates the ruffled effect. Continue zigzagging around all the pieces including the circles.
The elastic will make the scarf a bit more ruffly. If you are tall you may need the full 60″ length of the fabric for the scarf so you may want to layer the fabric and flowers without using the elastic. If you want it more ruffly measure out the elastic to the length of your desired scarf (my elastic measures 46″) . Divide the elastic in half and mark and each half in half again so you have four equal markings on the elastic.
Measure in 1″ from each end on the 6″ wide ruffled scarf piece and as you did with the elastic fold in half lengthwise and mark and again with each half so you have 4 equal parts. Match up markings on elastic to markings on the scarf and pin. Stretching the elastic as you sew to fit within space between the pins zigzag the elastic to the strip.
Fold the 4″ ruffled strip in four and mark. Matching up elastic markings with 4″ piece pinning and zigzag 4″ strip to elastic and 6″ piece stretching as you sew.
Layer flowers – place a 2″ circle on a 3″ circle and machine tack through both layers. Pin flowers on the scarf spacing them with ends touching in a way pleasing to you and then machine tack through all layers. Add pearls and any other embellishments and you are done!
It took me about an hour to cut and sew the scarf. I saved the pearls for when my favorite television show was on.
I would love to see how creative you are with your ruffled scarf so send me a picture.
