This week marks the beginning of all the holiday craziness. Parties, family events, baking cookies and sitting by the tree with cocoa. All of these events are wonderful, these are the memories we need to keep in our spirit basket. A spirit basket is the vessel we create during our lifetime. It will carry all those things we acquire, the gifts we will take to the next part of our journey. Gifts like love received and given, and all the joyful moments, the snapshots of our lives. We all need to be reminded to keep these moments near because they slip from our minds so easily.
Before the festivities begin, there is a very important day that is more than just a precursor to the biggest shopping day of the year. It is a day that serves to prepare us to be thankful for all that is really important in our lives. Thanksgiving is not only a day to be grateful, but one in which to look to the coming month. Reminding ourselves that there will be many moments that we will need to gather for our basket. Time spent with loved ones, sharing our abundance with those less fortunate, and the love and gentleness that this time of year brings to our hearts.
Though there are many gifts that fill our basket over the course of our lives, I believe that there are three that are most important and we need to intentionally keep in our thoughts, not just during the holiday, but all year.
The first gift is that we are alive. We are given the gift to be here, to experience every moment, the good and bad. Place the good in your basket and discard the bad. The bad simply will not fit in the basket overflowing with good memories.
The second gift is love. Love we give to others and the love we are given. There is nothing more important than to love and be loved unconditionally, it makes our basket stronger.
The third is the most important because without the it, the first two lose their impact upon the quality of our life. This is the gift of knowing the importance of the first two, love and life. It seems so easy to take being alive and being loved for granted with all the distractions provided by a life filled with events and commitments, but we must never forget.
This Thanksgiving as we are eating turkey and stuffing let’s all stop for a moment and take a snapshot of what you see, family and friends gathered together, and place it in your basket. Be an inspiration to others in attendance, reminding them of the value of the moment by expressing gratitude and love in all your words and actions. Allow yourself to be thankful for this day, because tomorrow is promised to no one. Be grateful for this gift you’ve been given, one more opportunity to add beautiful moments into your spirit basket.
Happy Thanksgiving my dear friends!
