I was looking at my gift list yesterday, making sure that I had everyone covered, and as I looked at the piles of wrapped gifts, I was overcome with the feeling of how little impact these “things” really have on our lives.
Oh they are a nice way to show people how you feel but there are more important gifts we have to give.
In the wake of awful events of the past like the Sandy Hook tragedy, pretty presents wrapped under a tree seem small and insignificant. It dawned on me that we don’t often think of some of the things on my new list as actual gifts but they are and these would have been the things that were important to us if we were leaving this earth.
The best thing about the new list was that I didn’t have to run out and buy anything, all of these are gifts I already have to give and all I have to do is remember to share them and give them away, every day.
This is my list and these are the gifts I promise to give.
to my children I give you my love forever and always, unconditionallywithout judgment or prejudice
to my husband I give you everything I possess most importantly my love
to my friends I give my deepest gratitude and love for being a special part of my life
to my enemies I give you forgiveness
to the world I give the very best I have to give of myself and hope that it will help in some small way
to myself I give the gift of strength to continue believing that everything I want for the world can someday come to be
to my readers I give you my thoughts and hope that it somehow it makes your life more beautiful and meaningful and that it inspires you to share your gifts each day.
Please join me in praying for the people all around the world. Although the most recent events leave us reeling with pain for the loss most fresh in our hearts, there are many walking among us lonely, lost and surviving with unimaginable pain that may not be as visible.
I believe that love for one another is the only way to change the course we have set.
What do you believe?
